As a result of the energy turnaround, there is a considerable need for expansion at all levels of the German power grid. Usually, distribution and transmission networks are planned separately, which means that synergies between the network levels are not optimally exploited in the planning process, thus increasing the overall costs of network expansion. In addition, electrical grids are often still planned "by hand" without the use of automated processes. Against this background, the joint project KonVeTrO together with the Fraunhofer IML is investigating to what extent planning procedures from the field of transport logistics can be adapted to the problem. The aim of the project is to develop an optimization process that enables congruent, cross-level network planning and thus minimizes the costs of the necessary network expansion across all network levels.
