Sustainable Energy Systems (SES)
The Sustainable Energy Systems research group investigates pathways towards sustainable energy systems. We combine modelling and data analysis to develop solutions for the transition of the buildings sector and to advance the sustainable and healthy operation of buildings. Beyond technological solutions, we are interested in the wider contexts that shape how energy technologies are developed, implemented and used.

Research Areas
Modelling building transitions
Models allow us to explore possible pathways towards a climate-neutral building sector and understand what drives successful transitions. Our research aims to make these pathways more realistic by looking beyond technological change alone: we investigate socio-technical dynamics, sector coupling and interactions with the wider energy system, integrate empirical data, and examine transitions under changing conditions such as a warming climate and increasing demand for cooling.
Building Performance and Monitoring and optimization
Monitoring and optimization help ensure that buildings perform sustainably while providing healthy and comfortable indoor environments. We research innovative approaches for monitoring, analysing and optimizing building operation, including advanced data-driven and automated methods. A particular focus is on translating these approaches into practice and understanding how they can be effectively implemented in real-world buildings.
Energy Transition Narratives
Energy transitions are shaped not only by technological developments, but also by how these developments are discussed and perceived. We apply data-driven approaches to systematically analyse these wider dynamics, using methods such as natural language processing to identify emerging narratives and track how they evolve over time.
