Power Hardware in the Loop

The Power hardware-in-the-loop (PHIL) system extends the test capability of the Smart Grid Technology Lab by combining physical components with simulation. The PHIL equipment includes a real-time digital simulator (RTDS) by Opal RT together with a power interface by Egston Power. Power networks and grid components can be modelled within the RTDS via MATLAB-Simulink. Physical devices can be interconnected to the simulated network throughout the power interface. The power interface consists of two identical groups of 4-modules Power Amplifiers with a rated power of 100 kVA per group. An optical fiber link ensures a fast and reliable communication between the power interface and the RTDS.
