Content

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have become essential tools for analyzing spatial
aspects of energy systems and sustainability challenges. This laboratory course introdu-
ces students to the fundamentals of spatial data and GIS-based analysis, with a particular
focus on applications in sustainable energy systems.
The course begins with an introduction to geographic data, including spatial data types,
coordinate systems, data quality, and common sources of geospatial information. Stu-
dents are then introduced to the open-source GIS software QGIS and learn how to visualize,
manage, and analyze spatial datasets.
Building on these foundations, students develop and conduct an independent GIS-based
research project on a topic related to sustainable energy systems. Students formulate a re-
search question, identify and acquire suitable datasets, perform spatial analyses, interpret
their results, and communicate their findings in a presentation.
The course emphasizes hands-on learning, critical assessment of data sources, reproduci-
ble workflows, and the application of GIS methods to real-world sustainability and energy
challenges.
