Power Hardware in the Loop

Coordinated Measurements for Proactive and Secure Power Supply

The Compass research infrastructure is a complete environment for the development and evaluation of innovative smart grid systems. For this purpose, several measurement systems and a real-time simulator are integrated into this environment. Smart Meter with an integrated smart meter gateway and its administration are included. Powerful phasor measurement units are also integrated into the system setup. All devices are connected using different communication protocols such as IEC 61850 (SV, Goose, MMS), C37.118 and IEC 60870-5-104. A link between simulation and real hardware is possible by using multiple voltage and current amplifiers.

Innovative Smart Grid Systems can be tested within the Compass environment while utilizing the available measurement systems. These tests can be carried out in a hardware in the loop simulation, where the functions to be tested work under realistic conditions. In this way, new functionalities can be developed in scenarios that are as realistic as possible.
